Last week I was commissioned to carry out a full pre-purchase condition survey and valuation on a Grand Soleil 43, Serendipity, here in Preveza. Built by Cantiere del Pardo, these yachts have earned a strong reputation for combining performance, craftsmanship and offshore capability, and this example reflected much of that pedigree.

The inspection took place both ashore and afloat, covering the complete structural, mechanical and domestic systems in accordance with IIMS surveying practice.

Hull & Structural Condition

This particular Grand Soleil presented an impressive structural profile. Moisture readings across the hull and topsides were notably low, with percussion testing confirming a dry and stable laminate. There were no signs of osmosis, voiding or previous structural repairs. The keel joint was sound with the bolts in good condition, and the internal grid structure was intact throughout. The decks felt firm underfoot, and the only notable concern was water tracking around the mast step, originating from the mast boot area – a common issue on older performance yachts and easily addressed with resealing. As you can see there was also some damage to the lower bulkhead.

Machinery & Saildrive

The vessel was equipped with a Yanmar 4JH3E, which ran smoothly with normal exhaust and no unusual vibration. The saildrive installation was generally clean, though an important point emerged: no evidence of recent diaphragm replacement. These diaphragms have a 5-year recommended service life, so its renewal was placed high on the safety-critical list.

Rigging, Spars & Sails

The standing rigging had been replaced in 2023, which is a major positive for any prospective owner. The spars were straight, all fittings secure, and no structural defects were noted. Running rigging showed a mixture of newer and ageing lines, and would benefit from staged renewal. The mainsail and genoa appeared serviceable, with UV-strips approaching the end of life—standard wear for Mediterranean cruising.

Steering, Deck Gear & Equipment

The steering system was functional with minor play associated with normal cable stretch. A single corroded clamp on the rudderstock gland required replacement. ( see image above) Winches, deck fittings and hardware were generally well maintained, and the ground tackle—with Delta anchor and 60 m of chain—was appropriately specified for a yacht of this size.

Interior & Domestic Systems

The interior of Serendipity was clean, dry and well cared for, with only superficial wear expected for a 2002 build. The galley, cabin joinery and upholstery were all in good order. The only notable defect was a corroded macerator pump beneath the forward black-water tank, which required replacement. (see image below). Electrical systems were well maintained, batteries were secure and relatively recent, and both inverter and charger were operational.

Safety Gear

Fire extinguishers and life saving equipment were present, although several items—most notably the liferaft and one extinguisher—were past service dates. These were marked for renewal.

Summary

Overall, Serendipity proved to be a solid, well-maintained performance cruiser with strong structural integrity and a good mechanical base. The deficiencies noted were primarily routine maintenance items—nothing unusual for a 23-year-old yacht. Once the safety-critical recommendations were addressed (mast step sealing, saildrive diaphragm, gas hoses, bilge pump replacement), she would be well suited for Mediterranean cruising or extended passage-making.

One thing i forgot the gas locker drain was blocked!

Valuation

After assessing her structural condition, rig, machinery, equipment list and comparable listings around the Mediterranean, her current fair market value was set at:

€90,000

This reflects a strong-performing Grand Soleil 43 in good overall condition within the Ionian market.
