“Buying a Yacht in Greece? Never Skip the Sea Trial.”

Why a Sea Trial Is an Essential Part of a Yacht Survey

Buying a yacht is a major investment, and while a detailed inspection ashore can reveal a great deal about the vessel’s condition, the true behaviour of a yacht is often only revealed when she is underway. For this reason, a sea trial forms an important part of a comprehensive pre-purchase survey.

During a sea trial the vessel is operated under normal conditions at sea. This allows the surveyor to observe how the yacht performs, how her systems operate under load, and how she responds to helm inputs and manoeuvring.

A yacht that appears sound when stationary may reveal faults once she is moving.

What Is Checked During a Sea Trial

During a typical sea trial several aspects of the vessel are evaluated.

The engine is run up to operating temperature and tested through a range of RPM settings. This helps confirm that the engine reaches its designed cruising and maximum revolutions while maintaining stable temperature and oil pressure. The propulsion system, including shaft, cutlass bearing and stern gland, can also be assessed under load.

Steering systems are examined while underway to confirm smooth operation and correct response from the rudder. Any stiffness, vibration or unusual noise may indicate wear or alignment issues within the steering gear.

Navigation equipment and onboard instruments are also checked while the yacht is moving. This allows confirmation that systems such as GPS, speed log, autopilot and wind instruments are functioning correctly.

For sailing yachts, the sea trial also provides an opportunity to observe the vessel under sail where possible. The rig can be visually assessed while loaded, and the handling characteristics of the yacht can be observed.

Why Sea Trials Often Reveal Hidden Issues

Many mechanical or operational problems only become apparent when a vessel is operating under real conditions.

For example, engines that run smoothly at idle may overheat when placed under load. Steering systems may feel normal alongside the dock but develop stiffness when the vessel is moving. Vibrations in the propulsion system may also only appear at higher engine speeds.

The sea trial therefore provides an additional layer of reassurance for the purchaser.

Sea Trials in the Ionian Region

Most sea trials I conduct take place in the waters around Preveza, Aktio and Lefkada, where many yachts are located ashore in the major boatyards and marinas of the Ionian region.

Weather conditions, marina traffic and vessel preparation all influence how a sea trial is carried out, but even a relatively short trial can provide valuable information about the yacht’s performance and systems.

Final Thoughts

A thorough pre-purchase survey combined with a properly conducted sea trial gives the purchaser the clearest possible understanding of the yacht’s condition.

While no survey can remove every risk associated with yacht ownership, observing the vessel underway is one of the most effective ways of confirming how she performs in real operating conditions.
