Just completed an insurance condition survey on a 1992 Feltz Skorpion 2, a German-built steel cruising yacht located here in Preveza—and this one really stood out for all the right reasons.

Overview of the Feltz Skorpion 2
Built by Feltz Werft in Hamburg, these yachts are known for their no-nonsense offshore design. Heavy steel construction, integral structural layouts, and a focus on durability rather than lightweight production make them a serious option for long-distance cruising. They’re not flashy boats—but they’re built to last.
A Well-Kept Example
This particular vessel presented in very good condition throughout. The hull, constructed from approximately 5mm steel plate, was checked using ultrasonic thickness testing. It confirmed that the original plate thickness was holding with no signs of wastage. Internally, the structure was clean, dry, and protected with a zinc-based coating system that remains in excellent condition—a key indicator of long-term care on any steel yacht.
Externally, paint systems across the topsides, deck, and coachroof were well maintained. There was no evidence of corrosion issues or structural concerns. For a vessel of this age, that’s exactly what you want to see.

Strong Engineering Throughout
One of the standout features of this yacht is the integrated long keel and overall structural design. Unlike bolt-on keel arrangements found on many production boats, this vessel uses a fully welded steel keel structure. This contributes to its strength and offshore capability.
The rudder and steering system followed the same theme—simple, robust, and well maintained. Stern gear, shaft, and propulsion components were all found to be in very good condition.

Rig and Deck Setup
The aluminium mast was climbed during the survey, allowing full inspection from deck level to masthead. All fittings and terminals were found to be in good order. The rigging—while of unknown age—appeared substantial and serviceable.
Deck equipment was equally impressive. From heavy-duty welded deck fittings and mooring cleats to a well-specified anchor system, everything reflected a boat designed with real-world cruising in mind.

Systems and Onboard Equipment
Engine, fuel system, electrical installation, and onboard equipment all presented in good working order, with clear signs of regular maintenance. Notably, the vessel benefits from modern additions including solar charging and a watermaker system, enhancing its suitability for extended cruising.

Final Thoughts
Steel yachts often divide opinion—but when they are maintained properly, they offer exceptional longevity and strength. This Feltz Skorpion 2 is a perfect example of that. A well-built, well-maintained offshore cruiser that has clearly been looked after over the years. From a surveyor’s perspective, it’s always satisfying to come across a vessel where the condition reflects the quality of the original build.

If you’re considering a steel yacht, this is exactly the standard you want to find.
Additional Considerations for Yacht Buyers
When you're looking to purchase a yacht, it’s essential to consider several factors. Understanding the construction materials, design integrity, and maintenance history can significantly impact your decision. Steel yachts, like the Feltz Skorpion 2, often provide a robust option for those seeking durability and longevity.
The Importance of Surveys
A thorough survey is crucial. It ensures that you are making an informed decision. Engaging with a qualified marine surveyor can help you identify potential issues before they become significant problems. This is especially important for older vessels, where wear and tear can be more pronounced.
Maintenance and Upkeep
Regular maintenance is key to preserving the value of your yacht. A well-maintained vessel not only performs better but also retains its market value. Be sure to ask about the maintenance history of any yacht you consider.
Choosing the Right Equipment
When outfitting your yacht, think about the equipment you’ll need for your specific cruising plans. Whether it's a reliable anchoring system or advanced navigation tools, having the right gear can enhance your experience on the water.
Conclusion
In conclusion, purchasing a yacht is a significant investment. By focusing on quality, maintenance, and thorough surveys, you can ensure that your investment is sound. The Feltz Skorpion 2 exemplifies the kind of vessel that can provide years of enjoyment and reliability.
